Is Berawa Safe for Solo Female Travelers? Honest Guide to Canggu 2026

If you are a solo female traveler Googling "Is Canggu safe?" you will get 100 scary TikToks and 100 overly positive blogs that are paid by villas. Neither is honest.
I am writing this as a woman who has lived and worked in Berawa, Canggu for 3 years and who hosts solo female travelers every week at Aviator Bali Apartment Hotel, Jl. Tegal Sari Gang Kana No.59, Berawa, Canggu. This is the honest safety guide for Berawa specifically, not for Bali in general, because safety changes every 500 meters in Canggu.
SHORT ANSWER: Yes, Berawa is the safest area in Canggu for solo female travelers in 2026, IF you know the rules. Here is the complete breakdown.
1. GENERAL SAFETY: BERAWA VS BATU BOLONG VS PERERENAN
Canggu is not one area. Safety is very different per area.
Batu Bolong at 11 PM on a Saturday is chaotic. Drunk tourists, dark small gangs, scooters driving fast, no street lights in some gangs. Catcalling happens. Bag snatching happens (rare but happens) because it is crowded and chaotic.
Pererenan at night is very dark and very quiet. Streets have no lights, no people. If your scooter breaks at 10 PM in Pererenan, you will feel unsafe because there is no one around. It is isolated.
Berawa is the middle. Our street Gang Kana and Jalan Tegal Sari is a local Balinese residential gang. Families live here. There are small warungs open until 10 PM, there are local families sitting outside, there are dogs, there are offerings. It is quiet but not isolated. There are always people around, but not drunk tourists. At Aviator Bali, our gang is well-lit, has secure parking with CCTV, and our manager lives 1 minute away and is on WhatsApp 24 hours. If your scooter has a problem at 10 PM, you WhatsApp us and we come.
For solo female, you want quiet but not isolated. Berawa is that.
2. TRANSPORT SAFETY: SCOOTER VS GOJEK AT NIGHT
This is the most important safety rule.
If you have never driven a scooter in Southeast Asia, DO NOT learn in Canggu at night as a solo female. Bali traffic has no rules, dogs cross the road, scooters drive without lights.
For solo female first time:
Daytime (6 AM - 6 PM): Gojek and Grab are very safe. Use Gojek (like Uber for scooter and car). Always check license plate. Share your trip with a friend using Gojek share feature. Cost from Berawa to Batu Bolong is Rp 18k-25k.
Nighttime (6 PM - 11 PM): Use GoCar (car, not scooter). It is safer, especially if you are coming home from a beach club like Finns or Atlas (3 mins from Aviator Bali). A GoCar from Atlas to Aviator Bali is Rp 35k-50k. Don't walk alone at night in dark gangs even if it is only 500 meters. Rp 50k is worth your safety.
After 11 PM: Don't go out alone if you don't have to. If you are at a beach club party, go with friends, share GoCar, share live location.
Our guests at Aviator Bali have a private WhatsApp group with our manager. If you feel unsafe at night, you send location and we track your Gojek.
3. ACCOMMODATION SAFETY: WHY HOTEL ROOM OR VILLA IS RISKY FOR SOLO FEMALE
This is what no one tells you.
Hotel room in Batu Bolong: Cheap hotel rooms often have thin walls, no secure parking, reception closes at 10 PM, no one around if you need help. Anyone can walk in.
Private villa in Pererenan or Berawa: You are alone in a big house with open living room. At night, geckos, frogs, and sometimes strangers can enter because villas are open. If AC breaks at midnight, who do you call? Owner is sleeping. You feel very isolated. We had a solo female guest move from a private villa in Pererenan to Aviator Bali after 3 nights because she heard someone walking in her garden at 2 AM. It was just a cat, but she felt unsafe.
Apartment hotel like Aviator Bali for solo female: This is why we have 70% solo female guests for long stay.
- Private apartment but not isolated. Other apartments around but with thick walls and private terrace.
- Secure parking with gate and CCTV.
- Manager on WhatsApp 24 hours who lives nearby.
- Daily housekeeping so someone checks your apartment daily (safety check).
- Full kitchen so you don't have to go out at night if you don't want to. You can cook.
- 2 minutes to Pepito supermarket, so you can shop during day.
- Well-lit gang with local families, not dark empty street.
You get privacy but not isolation. That is the key for solo female safety.
4. SCAMS TARGETING SOLO FEMALE TRAVELERS IN CANGGU
- The "Bali belly" drink scam: Don't accept free drinks from strangers at beach clubs. Watch your drink. This is rare in Berawa beach clubs (Finns, Atlas have good security), but it happens in cheap bars in Batu Bolong.
- The scooter rental scam: They will say you scratched the scooter and charge you Rp 3 million. Solution: Take video of scooter before renting, from all sides, with the owner in video. Rent from trusted place recommended by your accommodation. At Aviator Bali we only work with 2 trusted rentals who never scam.
- The money changer scam: They use calculator trick. Never exchange money at small shops with "no commission" sign. Use official money changer like Central Kuta or BCA ATM inside bank.
- The "I know you from Instagram" scam: Someone says they know you from Instagram, wants to be your friend, then asks for money. Ignore.
5. HEALTH SAFETY
- Bali Belly: Very real. Don't drink tap water. Don't have ice from small warungs (ice from Pepito is safe, it's factory ice). Wash hands. At Aviator Bali, we provide water dispenser with gallon water, so you don't need to buy plastic bottles.
- Sun: Bali sun is brutal. 30 minutes at 12 PM without sunscreen and you burn. Use SPF 50, wear hat. Berawa Beach has almost no shade.
- Mosquitoes: Dengue exists. Use Soffell pink repellent (buy at Pepito for Rp 15k). At Aviator Bali we provide mosquito repellent and have screens on windows.
6. REAL NIGHT SAFETY ROUTINE IN BERAWA FOR SOLO FEMALE
This is the routine our solo female long-stay guests use and love:
5:30 PM: Sunset at Berawa Beach (2 mins). Beach is still busy with families, safe.
7:00 PM: Dinner at Baked Berawa or Nude or Warung Bu Mi (2-3 mins). Busy, well-lit, safe.
8:30 PM: Go home to Aviator Bali apartment. Cook tea, work, read, yoga on terrace.
If you want to go to Atlas or Finns for party: Go with friends met at gym, use GoCar, share live location with our manager, come home by 11 PM with GoCar.
If you want to stay out late: Stay out in Berawa area only, not in far Pererenan or dark Batu Bolong gangs. And always have GoCar.
7. WHAT TO WEAR
Canggu is very open, you can wear bikini at beach, shorts everywhere. But in local gangs like Gang Kana where Aviator Bali is, local families live. Don't walk around in bikini top only in the gang. Wear t-shirt over. Respect goes both ways and locals will protect you if you respect them.
For temples, always wear sarong and cover shoulders.
Is Canggu safe for solo female travelers? Yes, but not all of Canggu is equally safe. Batu Bolong is chaotic at night, Pererenan is too isolated.
Berawa is the safest base because it is balanced: local residential but modern, quiet but not isolated, close to everything so you don't need to drive far at night, and with secure accommodation like apartment hotels that have 24-hour manager support.
We have hosted solo female travelers from 19 to 62 years old at Aviator Bali. They come for 1 week and stay for 2 months because they feel safe and they build a routine.
Safety in Canggu is not about being scared. It is about basing yourself smart.
