Surf in Berawa: The Complete Beginner Surf Guide in Canggu 2026

Everyone thinks you need to drive 1.5 hours to Uluwatu or Canggu's Batu Bolong to learn to surf. Everyone is wrong. The best, safest, and most consistent beginner surf spot in all of Canggu in 2026 is Berawa Beach, and it is 2 minutes from Aviator Bali Apartment Hotel, Jl. Tegal Sari Gang Kana No.59, Berawa, Canggu.

I have taught friends to surf here for 3 years. I have seen people pay Rp 800k for a surf lesson in Batu Bolong where they get injured by other beginners because lineup is packed with 100 people. And I have seen beginners learn faster, safer, and cheaper in Berawa.

Here is the complete beginner surf guide for Berawa that no surf school will tell you because they want you to pay for lessons in crowded spots.

WHY BERAWA BEACH IS THE BEST FOR BEGINNERS (NOT BATU BOLONG, NOT ULUWATU)

Let's compare.

Batu Bolong / Echo Beach: Famous, but terrible for beginners in 2026. Lineup has 80-120 people at any time, 70% are beginners who cannot control their board. Boards flying everywhere. You will get hit. Waves are messy because beach is crowded and river mouth makes current strong. You also have to pay Rp 50k for parking and fight traffic for 20 minutes to get there from Berawa.

Uluwatu / Padang Padang: Beautiful, but NOT for beginners. Reef bottom. If you fall, you cut your feet on coral. Waves are powerful and for intermediate+. And it is 1.5 hours drive from Canggu. You will spend 3 hours in traffic for 1 hour surf. Bad idea for daily learning.

Berawa Beach: Sandy bottom (no reef, no cuts), wide beach (300 meters wide so crowd spreads), consistent small waves 2-3 feet perfect for learning, and most importantly, fewer people than Batu Bolong because tourists think Berawa is only for beach clubs. At 6:30 AM, Berawa Beach has maybe 15-20 surfers, not 100. At 7 AM, you can have a whole peak to yourself.

And because Berawa is 2 minutes from Aviator Bali, you can check waves from your terrace, see if it's good, and be in water in 5 minutes. If waves are bad, you go back to work. No wasted drive.

THE PERFECT BEGINNER SURF ROUTINE IN BERAWA

This is the routine that actually makes you stand up in 3-5 days, not 2 weeks.

6:00 AM - Check Waves from Your Apartment

At Aviator Bali, we are 1.4km from Berawa Beach. Open Surfline app or Magic Seaweed. Look for Berawa forecast. Ideal beginner conditions: swell 2-3 ft, wind offshore or no wind, tide mid to high (low tide in Berawa gets shallow). If it says 2 ft and offshore wind, it's perfect. You don't need to drive anywhere to check. You can literally walk to beach to check in 10 minutes.

6:30 AM - First Session (The Best Time)

This is gold. At 6:30 AM, Berawa Beach is empty, water is glassy, no wind, no crowd. This is when you learn. 1 hour only. Don't do 2 hours as beginner, you will get tired and get injured.

Where exactly in Berawa Beach? Go to the middle section, in front of the big empty area between Finns and the small fishing boats. Avoid directly in front of Atlas Beach Club (too many people swimming) and avoid far left near the river (current strong).

Board to Use: For first 5 days, use 8-9 foot soft-top board. Don't use shortboard. Don't let ego kill your learning. Rent from Berawa local rental on beach: Rp 100k-150k per hour or Rp 200k for whole morning. Or buy second-hand soft-top for Rp 2.5m if you stay 1 month.

7:30 AM - Breakfast & Rest in Your Apartment with Kitchen

This is why apartment hotel is better than villa or hotel for surf learning. You come home after 1 hour surf, you are hungry and tired. If you stay in hotel room with no kitchen, you have to go out again in traffic to find food.

At Aviator Bali, you have full kitchen. You make eggs, oats, fruit, coffee. You rest, stretch, watch surf videos. You have daily housekeeping so your sandy apartment gets cleaned. You nap. You recover.

9:30 AM - Optional Second Session or Work

If you are on surf trip, sleep. If you are digital nomad who surfs, this is when you work. Because you surfed at 6:30 AM, you are done and you can work from 9 AM to 4 PM in your apartment with 200 Mbps WiFi.

4:00 PM - Second Session (Sunset Surf)

Berawa at 4:30 PM is beautiful but more crowded and windier. Good for second session if morning was good. But if you are beginner, better to surf only morning for first week to avoid fatigue.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT BERAWA WAVES

Berawa is a beach break with sandy bottom. Waves break left and right, mostly mellow. Best for beginners on small swell (2-3 ft). When swell is 5-6 ft, Berawa gets big and closes out, not for beginners. That is when you go to Batu Bolong or just rest.

Tides: Berawa at low tide (0.4m) gets very shallow and waves dump on sand. Not good for beginners, you will hit bottom. Best at mid tide (1.2m - 1.8m) and high tide. Check tide chart. At Aviator Bali, our manager sends daily surf report to guests WhatsApp group with tide and best time.

Currents: Berawa has a mild side current that pushes you towards Atlas. Not dangerous, but you need to paddle to stay in place. If you feel tired, don't fight current, paddle to shore, walk back.

HOW MUCH DOES IT COST TO LEARN SURF IN BERAWA?

  • Group lesson in Batu Bolong (crowded): Rp 400k-600k per 2 hours including board.
  • Private lesson in Berawa with local instructor (recommended): Rp 500k-700k per 2 hours, but you learn 3x faster because lineup is empty. We have trusted local instructor at Aviator Bali who lives in Berawa gang, not a tourist instructor. He has taught our guests for 2 years.
  • Board rental only (if you already know basics): Rp 100k per hour.
  • Monthly cost if you stay 1 month and surf daily: Rent board monthly Rp 1.2m - 1.5m from Berawa beach guy, much cheaper than daily rental.

If you stay at Aviator Bali for monthly rate (Rp 20m-28m), your total surf life cost is low because you don't need transport, you have kitchen, and you can surf daily without driving.

7 MISTAKES BEGINNERS MAKE IN BERAWA

  1. Surfing at low tide and hitting sand bottom.
  2. Using shortboard too early.
  3. Surfing in front of beach club where swimmers are.
  4. Not using reef booties? In Berawa you don't need reef booties because sandy bottom, but bring zinc sunscreen.
  5. Surfing 3 hours on day 1 and being too sore for 3 days after.
  6. Not checking current - always ask local fisherman or instructor where current goes that day.
  7. Leaving valuables on beach. Don't bring iPhone to beach. Bring old phone and Rp 50k cash only.

WHY BERAWA IS BETTER THAN ULUWATU FOR LEARNING

Uluwatu is beautiful but it is reef break, advanced, far, and expensive. You need to be intermediate to enjoy it. Berawa is your training ground. Learn in Berawa for 2-4 weeks, get consistent pop-up, learn to turn, then go to Uluwatu for 1 day trip to test yourself.

90% of people who go directly to Uluwatu as beginners get injured, scared, and quit surfing.

Learn in Berawa, graduate to Uluwatu.

THE BERAWA SURF LIFESTYLE

The best part about surfing in Berawa while staying at Aviator Bali is the lifestyle.

You wake up at 6 AM, check waves, surf 6:30-7:30, come home, make breakfast in your kitchen, work from your apartment with pool view, go to gym at 4 PM (Bambu Fitness 2 mins), surf again at 5 PM if you want, sunset at Berawa Beach with coconut, home by 7 PM, cook dinner in your kitchen, sleep early.

No traffic, no stress, no Rp 500k daily costs.

That is why long-stay surfers now live in Berawa, not in Batu Bolong. Batu Bolong is for Instagram surfers. Berawa is for real surfers who want to surf every day and still have a life.
